- Episode Introduction
-
Following the start of the Great Depression, the United States elected a new president in Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Roosevelt’s plan to help the economy and end the great depression was called his “New Deal” policies. This time in America spanned from 1933 to 1938. Over time many have argued if the New Deal was actually successful or not. However, what historians can not debate is if it was impactful. The main arguments against Roosevelt’s new deal policies is the amount of control that it gave to the presidency. The main argument for Roosevelt’s new deal policies is how Roosevelt was able to relatively rebuild the US economy.
While studying history, it is important to not look at historical events through modern day eyes, however it is evident that Roosevelt was incredibly impactful on not just the rebuilding of the US economy in 1933, but how we operate today. President Roosevelt’s policies were popular at the time, however over time historians have gone back and said that the level of power that the president had during this time set the wrong precedent. Overall, I hope to prove the long lasting impact that Roosevelt’s policies had. - Hosted By

My name is Cooper Collins, in today’s podcast I discuss President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and more specifically his New Deal policies. Today I discussed why it was successful, why it wasn’t and lastly the long lasting impact that it had on our country. I am currently a freshman at The University of the South: Sewanee and I am currently taking Andrew
Maginn’s History 202 class. I love all things history, and have previously considered making it my major here at Sewanee. In his class we use a very helpful resource called “Students Podcasting History”. This resource is developed by students taking Dr. Maginn’s History 202 class and is used as an outlet for students to show the research they have done in Dr. Maginn’s class. In our class, we take a deeper look into history starting in 1865 all the way to the present day. Students will be asked to heavily research their topic and transform into a podcast, designed to help other students. This resource will help students to better understand President Roosevelt and his attempts to fix the US economy following the Great Depression. I hope that this podcast was able to grow your understanding of not only President Roosevelt, but also all of his New Deal policies. - The Show
- Students Podcasting History is an educational resource developed by students in Dr. Andrew Maginn’s History of the United States II course to highlight crucial movements in American History through podcasting. The students research and interpret primary and secondary sources to discuss pivotal themes, people, and events in the United States' history from 1865 through the present. Through creatively sharing these narratives and learning digital tools, these students hope to make history more accessible and exciting for the general public.
