We explore the origins of the Double V Campaign and how A. Philip Randolph’s advocacy led to Executive Order 8802, which banned racial discrimination in the defense industry. This moment reflects deeper ideological tensions among African American leaders, especially between Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois. This next segment highlights the rigorous training, combat success, and challenges faced by the Tuskegee Airmen. Despite racist assumptions, they proved themselves in the air and took a stand on the ground during the Freeman Field Mutiny in 1945, where over 100 officers protested segregation. I discuss how the Airmen’s legacy influenced the Civil Rights Movement and led to the desegregation of the military in 1948. Connections are drawn to the New Negro ideology and the Pan-African Conference of 1919, showing the Airmen as part of a larger global push for equality.
