- item: On the monument it says “La patria al ejército de los Andes,” which translates to the fatherland of the Army of the Andes. Beneath that is a plaque with two men on it, with the words “el ejército de los Andes a su glorioso antecesor.” This translates to “the Army of the Andes by its glorious ancestor.” It is a large stone structure at the top of a hill, representing the crossing of the Andes, with bronze figures on horses guided by an angel. The very top tier has soldiers on their horses and the angel. The lower tier, at the front, includes soldiers on their horses, led by Jose de San Martín. Surrounded by that is a wrap-around bronze mural with figures making weapons, more soldiers carrying cargo, and on the back depicts women and their efforts of support. All of this is honoring all the work by the different people who made this trek possible. The monument was debuted to the public on February 12, marking one hundred years since the Battle of Chacabuco, which led to the victory of an independent Chile. The stones which make up the structure were brought down from the mountains in Mendoza. The monument sits at the top of a set of stairs, and overlooks the city of Mendoza.
