- Albert-Ernst Carrier-Belleuse (June 12, 1824-June 4, 1887) was a French sculptor. He was a founding member of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts. He has many significant works of art, including monuments to other independence leaders like Manuel Belgrano and Bernardo O’Higgins.

- Jose de San Martín passed away on August 17, 1850 in Boulogne-Sur Mer, France. He was originally buried in the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Boulogne, but stated in his will his wish to be returned to Argentina. Finally, in 1880, his remains were brought to Buenos Aires where he was placed in the Mausoleum created by French sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse in 1877.

- Under President Nicólas Avellaneda, San Martín’s remains were repatriated in 1880. Additionally, the remains of two other generals lay beside San Martín: Tomás Guido and Juan Las Heras, and a tomb of the unknown soldier. The Mausoleum is to this day guarded by two soldiers from San Martín’s regiment; Regimiento de Granaderos a Caballo.
